The Bearded Dragon (Pogona vitticeps) is one of the most popular and widely kept reptiles in the world due to its manageable size, calm temperament, and attractive appearance. Recognisable for its broad, triangular head, spiny “beard,” and expressive displays, this species is native to the arid and semi-arid regions of central and eastern Australia, where it enjoys basking on rocks and branches while hunting insects and foraging for vegetation.

In captivity, Bearded Dragons require a well-ventilated, spacious enclosure with both horizontal and vertical space for climbing. A basking area of 38–42°C should be provided, with a cooler area in the mid-20s°C. UVB lighting is essential for proper calcium metabolism, bone health, and overall wellbeing. Substrates such as sand, sandy soil, bark chips, or a mixture of those are recommended, along with hides, branches, leaf litter, and basking spots to encourage natural behaviour.

Their diet should be a balanced and varied mix of live insects like crickets, locusts, roaches, and mealworms, as well as leafy greens and vegetables. Juveniles should be offered a greater percentage of insects than adults, as the additional protein helps with growth and development. As the animal grows the diet can be shifted to the reverse, so adults receive plenty of vegetation with occasional insects. This helps prevent obesity and fatty liver disease, a common issue in captive dragons. Calcium and vitamin supplementation is crucial, especially for growing dragons.

Bearded Dragons are diurnal, interactive, and can recognise their keepers, often displaying friendly behaviour such as head bobbing and arm waving. With proper care, they can live 10–15 years, making them a great companion and an excellent choice for beginner reptile keepers.
