The Southern Pill Woodlouse (Armadillidium depressum) is a relatively large Armadillidium species native to the British Isles, as well as other parts of Western Europe; in France, Belgium as well as south into Italy. This species is incredibly similar in both appearance and care to the Common Pill Woodlouse (A. vulgare); it can be distinguished by its larger potential size as well as the gap it leaves when enrolled, compared to A. vulgare which encloses into a complete sphere with no spaces.

This easy to keep and easy to breed species is variable in appearance with different amounts of white/yellow dots on their backs, usually laid out in 3 rows. Interestingly they are somewhat sexually dimorphic as generally the females are larger with stronger markings.

As they are found within the UK, this species is easily maintained and is very tolerant of a range of temperatures. A. depressum do best kept between 17 and 24°C in semi-arid environments with a humidity of 55 to 75%. They may have issues moulting if kept at too high humidity. We have found this species to be less active than many others in our collection though are not too shy and will sit out in the open.

Sold in a tub of 10.

Please note that for the health and safety of these animals we will not ship Woodlice in cold weather.
