The African Square-marked Toad (Sclerophrys regularis) is a hardy and adaptable terrestrial toad species recognized by its variable brown to olive coloration and distinctive darker “square-like” blotches along the back. Its warty skin and robust build are well suited to a wide range of environments, including relatively dry regions.

This species is primarily nocturnal, spending the day hidden under rocks, in burrows, or beneath debris to conserve moisture. At night, it emerges to actively forage and is commonly seen around lights where insects gather. It is an opportunistic feeder with a strong feeding response.

In captivity, a horizontally oriented enclosure with a substrate that supports burrowing is recommended. A soil or soil-sand mix works well, with hides such as bark, cork, and rocks to provide shelter and security.

Humidity should be maintained at moderate levels (40–70%), with some areas kept slightly damp while allowing drier zones for choice. Good ventilation is important to prevent excessive moisture buildup. A shallow water dish should always be available for soaking and hydration.

Temperature should include a gentle thermal gradient, avoiding excessive heat. This species thrives in stable, moderate warmth rather than extreme basking conditions.

Feeding consists of appropriately sized live insects such as crickets, roaches, mealworms, and other invertebrates. Feeding should occur several times per week, preferably in the evening when the toad is most active.
